We’re starting to thaw out a bit here in Brooklyn and looking forward to warming up a bit tonight at Doris for our monthly Singles Club Nite. We’ll be spinning records starting at 9. It’ll be happy hour all night and the vibe should be right. For now, here are the latest gems we’ve had on repeat at HQ.
I remember hearing ‘Weekend’ by Smith Westerns in 2011 and never wanting it to end. After the group split in 2014, core members Max Kakacek and Julian Ehrlich made the move from Chicago to L.A to lay groundwork for what would be the first LP as Whitney. Lead single ‘No Woman’ is a laid-back, country-tinged gem filled that’s got us pining for long drives with the windows open. If you’ve been digging on Nap Eyes, Ultimate Painting and Gun Outfit, we can’t recommend Whitney enough. Whitney’s debut is out later this year via Secretly Canadian.
Ladada is the songwriting alias of Virginia Beach’s Josiah Schlater. We’d been hooked on these guys since their 2014, self-titled release for Gold Robot Records (listen to the track ‘Comets‘ immediately). They recently shared lead single ‘New Psych,’ from the forthcoming Hi Five EP. Here Schlater breathes new life into surf/garage-rock. It’s a ripper of tune poised to be our soundtrack to Spring. Hi Five drops April 1st via GRR.
