CMJ already? Damn. As hundreds of bands descend upon the city this week, we’re already feeling overwhelmed making our schedule. As difficult as it was for this post, we’ve managed to narrow the list down to two must-see acts. Do as you please, but here’s where you’ll find us this week. Plenty of chances to catch them both. Should be a hell of a week. Happy CMJ 2015.
Murals-Violet City Lantern Louisville’s Murals opened a show I was playing at with Quilt and Young Magic a few years ago at the Mercury Lounge. They got added late and I remember thinking, ‘how dare they add a fourth band this late in the game.’ I was an idiot. By the time they took the stage, my jaw was to the floor. These young kids were making some seriously refined psych-pop. Overjoyed when Trevor from FireTalk Records told me they’d be releasing their forthcoming LP, you’ll have 5 chances to catch murals this go around. Dig into their latest single/video for ‘Violet City Lantern’ to get familiar. Full CMJ schedule here. https://soundcloud.com/burgerrecords/michael-rault-nothing-means Michael Rault-Nothing Means Nothing Late last year Toronto’s Michael Rault dropped ‘Nothing Means Nothing,’ easily one of the catchiest and best singles of 2014 via Burger Records. Living Daylight, the follow LP is proof that Rault is here to stay. With a steady disposition for White Album-era Beatles, Rault is miles ahead of his slacker contemporaries when it comes to vocal harmonies and his guitar playing. Get this, you’ll have five, count’ em, five changes to catch the up and comer during CMJ. Full schedule here. See you there?
